Pesticide Notification Advisory
As part of the Elk Rapids Schools Integrated Pest Management Program, pesticides are occasionally applied. In non-emergency situations, Michigan law now requires the notification of parents of school students prior to the application of a pesticide at their school. In certain emergencies, such as an infestation of stinging insects, pesticides may be applied without prior notice to prevent injury to students and staff. However, you will be notified as soon as possible following any such application.
Advance notification of pesticide applications, other than a bait or gel formulation, will be given by at least two methods. The first method will be by posting at the main entrance to the school. The second method will be by one of the following: Posting in a public, common area of the school, other than an entrance — we will post at the District Office, at 308 Meguzee Point Rd, Elk Rapids, MI and the District website.
Please be advised that parent or guardians of children attending the Elk Rapids Schools are entitled to receive advanced notice of a pesticide application (other than a bait or gel formulation) by first-class mail postmarked at least three (3) days prior to the pesticide application, if they so request. If you prefer to receive the notification by first class mail, please complete the Pesticide Prior Notification Request below and return it to: Elk Rapids Schools Central Office, 308 Meguzee Point Rd, Elk Rapids, MI 49629.

Asbestos Annual Notification
The Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) requires notice to students, parents, and staff of the availability of the school’s asbestos management plan and any asbestos-related activities performed in the past year, such as response actions and inspections. The AHERA also requires inspection and notification of materials containing asbestos in school buildings.
In the classroom: Please contact the Custodial/Maintenance Department at 264-6987.
If you are using electrical equipment and the ground prong has been removed from the plug, contact the Maintenance Department at 264-6987. Do not use the piece of equipment until the cord or ground plug has been repaired or replaced.
When hanging student projects on the walls or decorating your classrooms, please do not stand on chairs, student desks, or tables. Always use an approved step ladder.
Always be cognizant of changes in a student’s behavior and any change in breathing, or other health problems that may occur from allergic reactions to plants and animals.
Plants in the classroom
It is important to know the name of the plant and any possible side affects. A child might put a leaf, or part of the plant in his/her mouth. Do not over water plants, as mold will grow and extra moisture in the bottom will draw insects. Keep all plants away from unit vents, the falling leaves will be drawn into the unit and possibly cause allergic reactions. Take daily care of the plant, checking the soil and plant for insect infestation. Remove all dead branches, leaves, etc., from the plant. Pick up all leaves from the floor as they can stain the carpet. All plants must be taken home unless they can be checked daily, during holiday, vacations and summer recess. For adding color to your classroom, artificial plants are a good option.
Animals in the classroom
The building principal must approve all animals brought into the school or classroom; including weekends and holidays. The owner must bring in a current shot record and health record from a veterinarian. Copies will be kept on file. All caged animals must be brought home during holidays, vacations and summer recess.
