October 2010

The 2nd fall session of tennis starts up the week of October 25th and we do have some new offerings.

First of all, we have improved our 36’ and 60’ tennis programs.  Our staff has been trained by Mike Barrell of the U.K., the world leader in 10 and under tennis development.  Mike works with federations all over the world and the ITF (International tennis Federation) has adopted his program as a standard.

Lisa Seymour, Katie Perdue the staff will be instructing the programs here at the resort.  Lisa is a former teaching pro from downstate and is currently a coach at the Grand Traverse Camps and the resort while Katie is a Coach at the TC West Team Tennis Academy and also the resort.  They have completed their training with Mike and are very excited to get going.

Overall, the outline of the program will stay the same (Tennis, Pizza and swimming), but the content will be much improved with an emphasis on tennis and athletic development.  The 6 and under (Red Ball Tennis), will only run one hour while the rest will run one and a half hours.

  • One and a half hours of tennis **
  • Pizza afterwards
  • Swimming for those who choose to do so (must have an adult on deck if under 16)

** The Level 1 class (6 and under) will run only one hour

There will be the same three levels:

Level 1: Red or Foam ball, 36’ court (ages 6 and under)

Level 2: Orange ball, 60’ court (ages 10 and under)

Level 3: Full court, Hard Ball (middle school and under)

Ability is also a factor, which means that if your child is a superstar, then they may need to be moved up based on their ability.

The ABC’s (Agility, Balance and Coordination) will be stressed in each class at the different levels and according to the age of the players (as this window does start to close on young athletes), as well as all of the basic strokes and tactics.  These players should be playing points by the end of the 6 weeks.  The goal is to prepare the players for any sport they wish to play in the future through the ABC’s of athletic development and at the same time, get them rallying and play real points as quickly as possible.
