Members & Friends of the Elk Rapids Area Historical Society:

ELK RAPIDS AREA HISTORICAL SOCIETY'S PROGRAM for
Thursday, August 26th, 2010
7:00 p.m.
At The Historic Elk Rapids Township Hall
401 River Street (across from the tennis courts)

 FRANK WILHELME presents:

 "The Dexters of Massachusetts:
The Elk Rapids Connection to a
Prominent American Family"

From their arrival in Boston in 1642 through the mid 20th century, nine generations of Dexters left an indelible mark on America and eventually the world.
Primarily through a combination of business acumen and a zeal for public service, the Dexters made significant contributions to numerous events and movements in American history, including the Revolutionary War, the establishment of the Republic, settling and developing the Michigan frontier,

anti-slavery and temperance activism, the rebuilding of Chicago, and the 20th century struggle for women's rights.

In the late 1940's, a Dexter descendant  gave the "Island House" to the Village of Elk Rapids to use as a library.

FRANK WILHELME is a former Executive Director of the Historical Society of Michigan.
